‘Sparkle’ Review

By

“Sparkle” is the remake of a 1976 film of the same name. The film is set during the Motown Era – in and around the city of Detroit in the late 60’s. “American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks stars as the title character. Her passion is writing music, and her oldest sister (named Sister) performs the […]

‘The Bourne Legacy’ Review

By

It’s “Bourne” without Bourne. “The Bourne Legacy” is the fourth installment in the successful spy/action franchise, but for the first time Matt Damon is not in the picture. However, the film does pick-up where 2007’s “The Bourne Ultimatum” left off. Jason Bourne is still alive (never seen, of course), but the bigger problem for the […]

‘Total Recall’ Review

By

Colin Farrell stars in this remake of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger film of the same name. Farrell plays Doug, which may or may not be his real name. Doug lives in a futuristic world with his wife (played by Kate Beckinsale), who may or may not be his wife. Doug isn’t happy with his life […]

‘Step Up Revolution’ Review

By

“Step Up Revolution” is the totally unnecessary fourth installment in a dance movie franchise whose only highlight is launching Channing Tatum’s career in the original back in 2006. Sure, all of the performers in “Revolution” would be contenders to win on “So You Think You Can Dance?” – but if they went on “So You […]

‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Review

By

“The Dark Knight” was the highest-grossing film of 2008 and won two Academy Awards (one for the late Heath Ledger’s incredible performance as the Joker). The Caped Crusader is forced back into action to face a new villain in Christopher Nolan’s satisfying final installment in his Batman trilogy – “The Dark Knight Rises”, a movie […]

‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Review

By

The “Spider-Man” movie franchise has been hugely successful at the box office. The original trilogy (’02, ’04, ’07, starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst) made close to $2.5 billion worldwide. When I heard Sony was going to “re-imagine” this series so quickly, I thought it was too soon. Aren’t there other stories out there to […]

‘Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection’ Review

By

Tyler Perry is one of the hardest-working men in the movie business. Since 2005, he’s written, produced, directed, and starred in about a dozen movies, many which feature his most popular character – Madea. All of his previous films have been a mixture of drama and comedy. But Perry called “Madea’s Witness Protection” his first […]

‘People Like Us’ Review

By

“People Like Us” comes from the same studios behind last year’s Oscar-winning “The Help”. And that’s about the only thing these two films have in common. Chris Pine (“Star Trek”) stars as Sam. He’s a businessman with money troubles. On top of that, Sam learns that his father, a successful LA music producer, has died. […]

‘Rock of Ages’ Review

By

They built this movie…(dramatic pause)…They built this movie on Rock ‘N Roll. And a half-naked Tom Cruise. Those are literally the two elements that keep this film adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical “Rock of Ages” from completely crumbling apart. This is not your typical movie, or your typical movie musical. The time is 1987. […]
