Jude Law stars in dramatic crime thriller “The Order” as FBI agent Terry. It’s the 1980s, and Terry moves to the Pacific Northwest, hoping for a little more of a laid-back life, even though he’s still on the job. Well that’s not going to happen because a bunch of robberies are taking place. The criminals: a group of white supremacists led by Bob Matthews (played by Nicholas Hoult). Tye Sheridan and Jurnee Smollett’s characters join Terry in this cat and mouse game of trying to take The Order down.
I screened “The Order” a couple months ago and the main thing that has stuck with me is that it’s a very average movie. The most effective and intense scenes are the robberies. Most of the rest of it is pretty mellow and cyclical.
Law and Hoult try a little too hard with their performances. We don’t care enough about the personal lives of anyone. And there are some conveniences with the subplots. One I wish was expanded out involves a radio show host played by Marc Maron.
I’m a little surprised “The Order” isn’t excellent considering the writer, Zach Baylin, penned “King Richard”, “Gran Turismo” and “Bob Marley: One Love”, all of which I like a lot and have much more depth. This isn’t an unwatchable film but any means but nothing truly special.
