As of Wed Feb. 18, “Zootopia 2” has a domestic box office total of $421.4 million. In its most recent weekend — No. 12 — the Disney Animation sequel was in an impressive 6th place, with $3.8M, and it’s still showing in over 2,000 theaters. Despite being out since November, and the new competition from Sony’s “GOAT” (which is already at $40M and counting), “Zootopia 2” is still doing nice business in North America. In fact, it’s less than $3 million away from topping “A Minecraft Movie” to become the highest grossing film of 2025.
Once this occurs (there’s no reason why Disney won’t keep it in theaters long enough for this to happen), we’ve got box office history. For the first time ever, there will be back-to-back years with animated movies topping the North American box office chart, with Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” for 2024 and Disney’s “Zootopia 2” for 2025. Pretty incredible.
Prior to “Inside Out 2”, the last time an animated film led the yearly chart was Pixar’s “Toy Story 3” way back in 2010. The only other animated movies to lead their respective years were “Aladdin” in 1992, “Toy Story” in 1995 and “Shrek 2” in 2004.
Disney will celebrate “Zootopia 2” topping WB’s “A Minecraft Movie”, which barely made more money than The Mouse House’s live-action / CG version of “Lilo & Stitch”. Disney tried to keep that in theaters for as long as it could, including with expansions, but “L&S” came-up a little short. “Zootopia 2” has more momentum behind it to cross the $424M mark.
According to BoxOfficeMojo, which has detailed yearly records from 1977 on, Disney’s first yearly win was Touchstone Pictures release “Three Men and a Baby” in 1987, followed by “Aladdin” and “Toy Story”. It wasn’t until 2006 that Disney had another champ in “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”. That was followed-up with “Toy Story 3” and then “Marvel’s The Avengers” in 2012. The Mouse House was a five-year champ with LucasFilm and Marvel titles from 2015 to 2019: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”, “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Endgame”. And then… the history-making animation doubleheader of “Inside Out 2” and “Zootopia 2″… as long as it happens. Stay tuned for updates!
