A number of movies released so far in 2018 have succeeded in winning a Box Office day, but not a weekend. Here’s how it’s happened:
“INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY”
These days, new movies tend to open on Thursday nights. Since this trend began about six years ago, all the studios decided that money a film earned on Thursday night would be counted in its Friday total. This fourth “Insidious” movie earned a combined $12.7 million on Thu & Fri, therefore winning the January 5 box office. But “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” came back with a vengeance on Saturday and Sunday, claiming the weekend title.
“THE POST”
Steven Spielberg’s Washington Post drama starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks expanded nationwide on January 12 and came in second that weekend (behind “Jumanji”). While it was never a No. 1 movie of the weekend, “The Post” was the No. 1 movie of the day on January 18, 24 and 25.
“12 STRONG”
This all-star action drama earned a combined $5.67 million on Thursday January 18 and Friday January 19, barely top fellow newcomer “Den of Thieves” ($5.63M). But – and there seems to be a pattern here – “Jumanji” earned the weekend top spot. “12 Strong” was also the top movie on January 23…
“DEN OF THIEVES”
…and “Den of Thieves” was actually the top-grossing movie of the day on January 22.
“WINCHESTER”
This dull thriller starring Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke attracted enough of the horror movie crowd to win the February 2 box office with $3.6 million. But you can probably guess by now which movie won that weekend. Hint: it starts with a J.
“PETER RABBIT”
This family adventure faced some strong competition on opening weekend, losing to “Fifty Shades Freed”. But it did manage to earn the most money on that Sunday, February 11.
“A WRINKLE IN TIME”
Disney’s fantasy film from director Ava DuVernay barely topped “Black Panther” on its opening day, March 9, with $10.2 million. But the Marvel blockbuster bounced back, winning that weekend.
“SUPER TROOPERS 2”
Fans of the cult classic comedy came out in droves on this sequel’s opening day (Thu April 19/Friday April 20), with an easy $7.95 million victory. But with huge drop-offs on Saturday and Sunday, it ended-up coming in 4th place for the weekend.
“MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN”
This musical follow-up couldn’t take down Denzel Washington’s “The Equalizer 2” on opening weekend, but it did win the days of July 20, 23, 24, 25 and 26.
“A SIMPLE FAVOR”
The Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively mystery thriller has been a decent moneymaker so far. It came in 3rd on its opening weekend but managed to win the Thursday September 20 box office with $1.25 million.
