“Toy Story 3” is going for the ultimate Oscar story, as Disney/Pixar is campaigning for the film to not only be nominated for Best Picture, but to win the most important of all the Academy Awards. The way I see it, there’s more “buzz” surrounding performances than actual movies this year, so that should help.
Even though it won’t be in the running for a Best Picture Golden Globe (because, starting in 2006, animated films were banned from being nominated in a Best Picture category – which I think is ridiculous), “TS3” is a lock for an Oscar nomination. What should also happen, is that Lee Unkrich gets a Best Director nod, and the writing, and the score are also honored, and, obviously, a nomination and win for Best Animated Feature.
But it’s great to see the studio going for the grand prize, with a marketing campaign that includes a series of very funny posters involving “TS3” characters and past Best Picture winners.
Here’s the link to the two campaign posters released so far, and more on the strategy
I know we’re still two months away from Oscar noms, but not only will “Toy Story 3” be a Best Picture nominee, I say IT WILL WIN. If you think I’m crazy, remember I was the only critic to correctly predict that “TS3” would be the #1 movie of the Summer.
Brace yourselves, everybody: February 27th, 2011 will be an historic night in the history of Motion Pictures.
