That’s the definitive line from two-time Oscar winner George Clooney in the teaser trailer of “Tomorrowland”, opening next week. The sci-fi adventure is one of the rare films of Clooney’s career that’s rated PG, and this is also the first time he’s starred in a film from Walt Disney Pictures.
The same statement doesn’t apply to “Tomorrowland” director, Brad Bird, who’s won two Oscars for Best Animated Feature for Disney – “The Incredibles” and “Ratatouille” (he also earned nominations for writing both screenplays).
Bird worked on the first several years of “The Simpsons” before directing the cult animated hit “The Iron Giant” (1999). And following the successes of “The Incredibles” and “Ratatouille”, Bird took a stab at live-action with 2011’s “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”. While I didn’t think it was as much fun as should’ve been, it was praised as the finest of the franchise and the box office was spectacular.
Now Bird returns to the Mouse House for “Tomorrowland”, with an all-star cast of Clooney, Hugh Laurie, country superstar Tim McGraw, Keegan Michael Key, and “The Longest Ride”‘s Britt Robertson, who plays the teen at the center of this story who travels with Clooney to a Tomorrowland far beyond the iconic Disney theme park.
Bird’s immediate future is already laid-out nicely. He’s confirmed that “The Incredibles 2” will be his next project. It’s long overdue, but there is skepticism, particularly because of Pixar’s obsession with sequels (“Toy Story 4” is coming in 2017 whether we like it or not).
As for moviegoers, starting on the 22nd, Regal Cinemas Crown Club members who buy tickets to see “Tomorrowland” will receive a special “Tomorrowland” pin, just like the one
Robertson uses in the film (while supplies last, of course). Let’s hope the ticket leads us to somewhere just as amazing as the pin does for her.
