The boy known as Harry Potter has started a trend that we may be seeing continue over the next year or so: going from 3D back to just 2D. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1” will no longer be in 3D or IMAX 3D when it opens on November 19. Apparently, the film wasn’t even shot in 3D, Warner Brothers was just going to convert the film from 2D to 3D.
According to Parade.com, the studio stated that they weren’t going to be able to finish the conversion in time for the release, (of course…these films are so long!) It also said that WB didn’t want to disappoint anyone.
I don’t think they’ve disappointed anyone, they’ve made people feel better. Many people simply cannot afford the extra money to see movies in 3D and IMAX 3D. It can cost an extra $4-$8 for these versions, which is a a lot, especially for family films.
I guarentee that this is going to be happening more and more, maybe even with films still to come this year. “HP7 Pt. 1” will be in 2D, and IMAX next month, but WB still plans on Pt. 2 to be in 3D on July 15, 2011.
I think that’ll be a little weird. You see one part of a film in 2D, and the next part in 3D? I bet before next June, Warner Brothers will be making a similar announcement to the one this week, and they’ll decide that Pt.2 will be best shown in 2D as well.
