4-time Golden Globe and 2-time Emmy nominee Antonio Banderas is getting Oscar buzz for his performance in the new drama “Pain and Glory” (opening in select theaters this weekend). Here are the biggest films and roles of his career to date:
“PHILADELPHIA” (1993)
Banderas played Miguel, opposite Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington, in this powerful drama.
ZORRO SERIES
1998’s “The Mask of Zorro” earned $94 million, while the 2005 follow-up “The Legend of Zorro” only earned $46 million. Still, Zorro is one of Banderas’ most recognizable characters.
“SPY KIDS” SERIES
As Gregorio Cortez, Banderas appeared in all four films (released in 2001, ’02, ’03 and 2011), totaling more than $550 million worldwide.
“SHREK”/“PUSS IN BOOTS” SERIES
Puss in Boots was the breakout star of 2004’s “Shrek 2”. Banderas returned for “Shrek the Third” (2007) and “Shrek Forever After” (2010) before headlining his character’s nearly purr-fect 2011 prequel.
“THE SPONGEBOB: MOVIE SPONGE OUT OF WATER” (2015)
In SpongeBob’s big screen sequel, Banderas was the prominent live-action character Burger Beard. No word yet on if he’ll be back for next year’s third theatrical installment “It’s a Wonderful Sponge”.
“GENIUS: PICASSO” (2018)
Banderas delivered a delicate yet rugged performance as iconic painter Pablo Picasso on the second season of the National Geographic Channel’s special miniseries. For his work, Banderas earned SAG, Critics Choice, Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.
Banderas can also be seen in Steven Soderbergh’s “The Laundromat”, which is currently in select theaters and will be on Netflix in a few weeks. And Coming Soon: the long-awaited “X-Men” movie “The New Mutants”, “The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle” with Robert Downey, Jr., “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” (the sequel to the hit 2017 action comedy) and “Lamborghini: The Legend”. He plays Mr. Lamborghini, while Alec Baldwin plays Mr. Ferrari. Not surprised that it’s being held until next year, after the upcoming “Ford v. Ferrari” has its moment in the Winner’s Circle.
