Big Movie Ads returned in full force for Super Bowl LVII. From 5:50pmET to before the National Anthem, studios delivered teasers for four major upcoming releases. Paramount showcased “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” (out March 31) and “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” (opening June 9). Sony had “65” (out March 10). And Universal ran an ad for “Cocaine Bear” (February 24).
Just after the National Anthem Disney presented a Super Bowl spot for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”, which will kick off the summer movie season in May. In the first quarter, Disney returned with “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” (coming out at the end of June), and Universal ran a promo for “Fast X” (which opens May 19th; tickets are already on sale). There were also celeb ads featuring Bradley Cooper and his mom and role reprisals from “Clueless” star Alicia Silverstone and “Zoolander”‘s Ben Stiller.
At the end of Q1: Warner Bros. unveiled part of the new trailer of “The Flash” (arriving June 16), with Michael Keaton in a highly-anticipated Batman comeback. The 2-Minute Warning saw a Heineken “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” commercial. Marvel’s first 2023 release is just a few days away. And at Halftime: MGM’s “Creed III” (March 3).
In Q3 — an intriguing look at Amazon Studios’ upcoming theatrical release “AIR” (April 5), from director and co-star Ben Affleck. During the fourth quarter: a celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Disney — featuring a moment of Halle Bailey as Ariel in the live-action version of “The Little Mermaid” (coming this Memorial Day Weekend).
As for the game itself… wild. And Gronk MISSED the live FanDuel field goal. Rihanna sung some of her biggest hits during Halftime — and I’m sure she’ll be on the Oscar stage in four weeks to perform her nominated “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” song, “Lift Me Up”.
