The ’09 holiday movie season is about to begin, but already I’m looking forward to what is going to be a monumental “battle at the box office” next summer.
Think about it – Three HUGE movie are set to be released within 6-weeks of each of other: “Iron Man 2” (5/7), “Shrek Forever After (5/21) and Toy Story 3” (6/18). All three should do incredible business, but which one will be the box office champ? It seems like every year lately has been “The Year of the Sequel”, but with these three leading the way, ’10 may be the year of the best sequels.
Early prediction in this showdown: “Toy Story 3” wins, followed by “IM 2”, with “Shrek FA” finishing a close third. Of course a lot will have to do with how good the movies are, though people will fill theaters around the country the first weekend for all three even if there reviews aren’t great.
Other news: Sony has decided to extend the release of “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” past the two weeks it was originally supposed to run. This is not a surprise, considering how well the film is doing at the box office and the positive reviews. “This Is It” has already grossed over $100M worldwide.
