I guess we all knew this was coming, but it’s still pretty scary now that it’s actually true: James Cameron has announced that he will be doing both an “Avatar 2” and an “Avatar 3” as his next two films. They are scheduled for release in 2014 and 2015. And I was hoping that sequels were not going to be as popular in the future.
It makes sense for Cameron to do this, because the first “Avatar” made so much money. But we all know, by 2014, people aren’t going to care about Pandora and all those blue people. Sure, these movies should do O.K. at the box office, but unless the stories are a lot more interesting than the original they won’t make close to the money that the first one made (except by then tickets for the IMAX/3D versions will be $50 each).
Here’s what I hope: “MegaMind” is so successful that Dreamworks wants to make a sequel for 2014 and they swing a deal with Cameron to put MegaMind, Hollywood’s new, blue superhero, in “Avatar 2” with the blue Na’vi. Now there’s a movie I would stand in line to see.
And this one, too: “The Dark Knight Rises” is officially the title of Christopher Nolan’s 3rd Batman movie, which is schedule to come out in the summer of 2012. Nolan has also announced that the film WON’T be in 3D (thank you), and The Riddler won’t be the villain.
Who WILL be the villain? That riddle has not been be solved yet and Nolan isn’t saying.
