SURPRISES: “The Big Sick” as a Best Picture nominee. It’s a great film, but I only thought it would get in the Best Comedy categories (and Hunter’s well-deserved Supporting Actress nomination). Wasn’t sure if Gyllenhaal would be a Best Actor nominee.
Glad to see Stewart got in for “Logan” and Chau is in the Supporting Actress race for “Downsizing”. Two “Call Me” Supporting Actor nominees: Hammer and Stuhlbarg. And Haddish may be this year’s Melissa McCarthy, who earned an Oscar nom in 2012 for “Bridesmaids”.
SNUBS: Best Picture nominations for “Blade Runner 2049”, “I, Tonya”, “Mudbound”, “Wind River”, “Wonder” and “Wonder Woman”. Best Animated Feature nominations for “Captain Underpants” and “Cars 3”.
In the acting categories: Sam Elliott (“The Hero”), Hugh Jackman (“Logan”), James McAvoy (“Split”), Andy Serkis (“War for the Planet of the Apes”), Denzel Washington (“Roman J. Israel, Esq.”), Annette Bening (“Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool”), Judi Dench (“Victoria & Abdul”), Diane Kruger (“In the Fade”), Bryan Cranston (“Last Flag Flying”), Jason Mitchell (“Mudbound”), Mark Rylance (“Dunkirk”) and Melissa Leo (“Novitiate”).
Glad Jacob Tremblay got in for “Wonder”, but his sister in the movie, Izabela Vidovic, is just as good. And Joe Wright (“Darkest Hour”) and Craig Gillespie (“I, Tonya”) didn’t make it in Best Director category.
