Here are 20 Movies you may not remember topped the Weekend Box Office this decade:
“Takers” (2010)? – This Screen Gems crime drama earned $20.5 million from August 27-29, edging out fellow newcomer “The Last Exorcism” ($20.4M).
“The American” (2010) – ?George Clooney’s Focus Features drama began its run with $13.2 million, good enough for first place over that Labor Day weekend.
“The Rite” (2011)? – WB’s Anthony Hopkins drama opened to a less than spectacular $14.8 million, but it got to brag for a week that it was America’s top movie.
“The Roommate” (2011) – ?Similarly, the very next weekend, the same went for this thriller that grossed a slightly better $15 million.
“Contagion” (2011)? – Steven Soderbergh has made quite a lot of films over the past decade. Do you recall this all-star drama about an epidemic? It scared-up $22.4 million.
“Immortals” (2011) – ?Before he was Superman, Henry Cavill starred in this action film from Relativity Media. It earned $32.2 million on the weekend of November 11-13, beating Adam Sandler’s “Jack and Jill” ($25M) and Clint Eastwood’s “J. Edgar” ($11.2M).
“Chronicle” (2012)? – With a $22 million start, it’s the sci-fi thriller that allowed Josh Trank to direct the 2015 version of “Fantastic Four” (which ended-up being a disaster).
“End of Watch” (2012) – ?In a photo finish, this Jake Gyllenhaal cop drama beat-out fellow newbies “House at the End of the Street” and “Trouble with the Curve” with $13.2 million.
“Zero Dark Thirty” (2013) – ?Though released in select theaters in 2012, Kathryn Bigelow’s action drama starring Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain pulled-in a strong $24.4 million in its wide release expansion in January.
“Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters” (2013)? – Even with terrible reviews (including one from yours truly), this experiment gone wrong still opened at No. 1 with $19.7 million.
“Prisoners” (2013)? – Well-admired for its performances and tone, director Denis Villeneuve’s drama was a mild box office success as well, beginning with a $20.8 million first weekend.
“The Other Woman” (2014) – ?Remember when Kate Upton was in that rom-com with Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann? Yeah, you’re not alone. Still, FOX won that weekend with it, to the tune of $24.8 million.
“Exodus: Gods and Kings” (2014)? – It was poised to be Ridley Scott’s next great epic. Even so, FOX also won that weekend with it, to the tune of $24.1 million.
“Chappie” (2015)? – “District 9” director Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi drama was… crappie. And so was its box office open of $13.4 million – still good enough for first place.
“The Boss” (2016)? – Melissa McCarthy’s movies have made a lot of money at the box office. But I forgot this movie even existed, let alone won the weekend (with $23.6 million).
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” (2016) – ?Yeah, you probably didn’t remember they made a second one of these, either. It earned $35.3 million in its first weekend.
“The Dark Tower” (2017)? – Weeks before “It” took movie theaters by storm, this Stephen King adaptation got panned by critics and audiences – after $19.2 million worth witnessed it during weekend no. 1.
“Jigsaw” (2017) – ?The “Saw” franchise actually got rebooted a few years ago. It pieced together $16.6 million from Friday through Sunday.
“The House with a Clock in Its Walls” (2018) – This odd, old-fashioned family film attracted the star power of Jack Black and Cate Blanchett… and their fans, with $26.6 million open.
“The Upside” (2019)? – After being on the shelf for more than a year during the Weinstein Company meltdown, STX revived the Bryan Cranston/Kevin Hart comedy, which shot up to the top of the charts with $20.4 million in January.
