Several Twitter users have now been asking fellow Twitter users to rank their favorite Oscar winning acting performances of this decade. The 2010s.
Or is it just the 10s? No one really talks about the 1910s. They just say, “The early 1900s.” The decade numbers really begin with the 1920s – a.k.a. “The Roaring Twenties”.
Anyway, here they are. I rank all (well, nearly all) the Oscar winning performances from this decade:
Best Actor
1. Daniel Day-Lewis – “Lincoln” (2012)
2. Rami Malek – “Bohemian Rhapsody” (2018)
3. Gary Oldman – “Darkest Hour” (2017)
4. Matthew McConaughey – “Dallas Buyers Club” (2013)
5. Jean Dujardin – “The Artist” (2011)
6. Colin Firth – “The King’s Speech” (2010)
7. Casey Affleck – “Manchester by the Sea” (2016)
8. Leonardo DiCaprio – “The Revenant” (2015)
9. Eddie Redmayne – “The Theory of Everything” (2014)
Honestly, they’re all very good.
Best Actress
1. Jennifer Lawrence – “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012)
2. Meryl Streep – “The Iron Lady” (2011)
3. Julianne Moore – “Still Alice” (2014)
4. Emma Stone – “La La Land” (2016)
5. Brie Larson – “Room” (2015)
6. Cate Blanchett – “Blue Jasmine” (2013)
7. Olivia Colman – “The Favourite” (2018)
8. Frances McDormand – “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017)
My apologies to Natalie Portman. I still have to catch-up on “Black Swan”. It’s on the list of probably 200 movies (I’m not exaggerating) that I may eventually get to in my life. Hundreds of people have said to me over the years: “OH MY GOD, I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU HAVEN’T SEEN ___________ (fill in the blank). To all the naysayers out there, you can be a successful film critic without having seen every movie ever made. And your life won’t be dampened one iota.
Best Supporting Actor
1. J.K. Simmons – “Whiplash” (2014)
2. Mahershala Ali – “Green Book” (2018)
3. Jared Leto – “Dallas Buyers Club” (2013)
4. Mark Rylance – “Bridge of Spies” (2015)
5. Christopher Plummer – “Beginners” (2011)
6. Mahershala Ali – “Moonlight” (2016)
7. Christoph Waltz – “Django Unchained” (2012)
8. Christian Bale – “The Fighter” (2010)
9. Sam Rockwell – “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (2017)
Ali is the only person with two appearances on this list of 36 winning performances.
Best Supporting Actress
1. Allison Janney – “I, Tonya” (2017)
2. Viola Davis – “Fences” (2016)
3. Alicia Vikander – “The Danish Girl” (2015)
4. Anne Hathaway – “Les Miserables” (2012)
5. Lupita Nyong’o – “12 Years a Slave” (2013)
6. Regina King – “If Beale Street Could Talk” (2018)
7. Octavia Spencer – “The Help” (2011)
8. Patricia Arquette – “Boyhood” (2014)
9. Melissa Leo – “The Fighter” (2010)
So there you go. And to be honest, out of these 36 choices, I only agree with The Academy on 13 of them. Which ones? Well, just search LCJ Movie Awards on this site and you’ll be able to find them.
