This was a wild weekend at the movies, with 4 new releases targeting 4 different audiences, all battling a 17 year old re-release for the top spot.
– I can’t believe that “The Lion King 3D” won the box office battle for the second straight week. Certainly the extra 3D money helped, but who are these people who keep going to this movie, especially when they all have it on DVD in their homes?
– Of course this is going to inspire Disney and other studio to re-release some of their “classic” films in 3D. This is NOT something anyone who loves movies to be happy about.
– Really surprised that “Moneyball” is so much about baseball. Pure sports movies almost always fail at the box office because there aren’t enough die-hard sports fans out there who go to movies (they’d rather watch games). Having Brad Pitt helps, but a few more “relationship” subplots would have helped the marketing of the movie.
– I’ve seen hundreds of trailers in my lifetime but “The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo” trailer has to be the longest – 3:50! But the editing is great and it doesn’t give away too much of the story. All trailer producers should watch this and take notes.
