The Academy Awards nominations almost always include some surprises. I was a little worried that it wouldn’t be the case this year. But I was wrong.
Here are some of the shockers that have Hollywood buzzing:
– Javier Bardem’s Best Actor nomination. He knocked Mark Mahlberg out of the category.
– Jennifer Lawrence and John Hawkes and their film, “Winter’s Bone” all getting nominations.
– How about Christopher Nolan NOT getting a Best Director nomination. Most thought he was a lock.
– With only three nominees in the category, one of the year’s great Animated films had to get snubbed. Unfortunately it was “Despicable Me”. The academy needs to open this category up to five nominees, no matter how many animated films are released each year. Animation deserves that respect.
– I know this category has some strange rules, but how could “Waiting for Superman” not be one of the five Best Documentaries of the year?
I’m happy that Hailee Steinfeld got a Best Supporting Actress nomination. There had been talk that some voters had her in the Best Actress category, which could have prevented her from getting enough support for ‘Supporting’.
Nice to see “True Grit” get the attention it deserves after getting completely ignored by the Golden Globes.
And glad that “We Belong Together”, from “Toy Story 3” is one of the four Original Songs, and that it also got Best Screenplay and Sound Editing noms, to go along with Best Picture. Let’s see: great sound and music, great writing, best reviewed film and it made the most money. Sure sounds like the best movie of the year to me!
