Here are the biggest snubs and surprises from the Oscar Nominations:
– Eight Best Picture nominees: “Star Wars”, “Carol”, “Compton” not on the list
– Lenny Abrahamson (“Room”) and Adam McKay (“The Big Short”) with surprise Best Director nominations; Ridley Scott (“The Martian”), Todd Haynes (“Carol”), Steven Spielberg (“Bridge of Spies”) snubbed
– No Johnny Depp (“Black Mass”) or Will Smith (“Concussion”) in Best Actor group
– Charlotte Rampling (“45 Years”) gets in Best Actress category
– Tom Hardy in the Supporting Actor race for “The Revenant”; action/thriller leads with 12 nominations
– Idris Elba not in Supporting Actor category for “Beasts of No Nation” and neither are Michael Shannon (“99 Homes”), Jacob Tremblay (“Room”) and Paul Dano (“Love & Mercy”)
– Helen Mirren denied in both Best Actress (“Woman in Gold”) and Supporting Actress (“Trumbo”) categories
– Pixar gets “Inside Out” into Animation category but not “Good Dinosaur”; “Peanuts Movie” not on ballot, either; two slots filled by indies “Boy and the World” and “When Marnie Was There”
– Aaron Sorkin just won Best Screenplay Golden Globe, but his “Steve Jobs” script doesn’t make Oscars Adapted Screenplay cut
– Quentin Tarantino didn’t earn an Original Screenplay nomination for “The Hateful Eight”
– No “Jurassic World” Visual Effects love
– “See You Again” is NOT one of the five Original Song nominees; “Youth”‘s only nomination is in this category for “Simple Song #3”
– “Sicario”, “Mad Max”, “Star Wars”, “The Martian” dominate technical categories
– “Straight Outta Compton” gets Original Screenplay love; no Amy Schumer nomination for “Trainwreck”
– Who would’ve thought that “Joy”, “Trumbo”, “Youth” and “Creed” would have the same number of nominations as “Fifty Shades of Grey” and “The 100-year-old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared”? Jennifer Lawrence received 4th Oscar nomination, and that other film is one of three Makeip & Hairstyling nominees
