Last year Disneynature came out with it’s first Earth Day release, “Earth”. This year (as Sebastian from “The Little Mermaid” would say), the studio goes “Under the sea” with “Oceans.”
The documentary takes moviegoers all around the world, to our planet’s five oceans, to explore the creatures the live deep in the water and on the surface.
What makes “Oceans” different, and better, than “Earth” is that this movie shows you a wide variety of oceans creatures, many we have never seen before or know anything about, while “Earth” only focused on three animal families.
Most of the scenes are amazing. And you can only imagine how tough it was to make this film, with most of the shooting tasking place underwater. There are several scenes that I will never forget, and they really make you wonder “How in the world did they do that?”
If you’re wondering, there are penguins in “Oceans.” Since “March of the Penguins” came out in 2005, it seems you can’t make a nature documentary without penguins.
OO7 himself – Pierce Brosnan, does as excellent job as the narrator. And the script is very well done. There are people in the film, including a marine biologist who swims with a great white shark. Now that’s something you don’t see everyday!
There is some talk in “Oceans” about pollution and what humans are doing to harm the oceans around the world, but mostly the message of the movie is positive.
“Oceans is rated G. There are some scenes of creatures eating other creatures, but they won’t scare kids and there’s no blood. The movie is appropriate for all ages and both kids and adults will enjoy the wonders and the beauty of the film, which is also very educational. It was great on the big screen. On DVD it loses some of it’s magic.
There are some nice Special Features, including a music video and a Disney & Nature: Preserving the World We Share piece.
On The Official Kid Critic Report Card, “Oceans” gets a B+.
Next up in the series is not “Sky”, but “African Cats: Kingdom of Courage”, which will open Earth Day 2011. Lions and Tigers and Disney – Oh My!
