A critic has to not only review great films, but also has to tell the audience that some movies are just flat-out bad. In my opinion, these are the worst family films Hollywood produced in 2010:
10. “Alice in Wonderland”
Tim Burton’s version of the classic books and original Disney film, was long, serious, depressing, not fun, and we see Alice in battle gear more than in her little blue and white dress.
9. “Alpha & Omega”
The worst animated film of the year. A small studio made the movie, which deserved to be a Direct-to-DVD release. It’s predictable, dull, boring, and supplied no laughs. At times it’s on the edge of being a little inappropriate, and has goofy musical numbers where the wolves just howl.
8. “The Last Airbender”
Corny acting, too many unnecessary close-ups, the characters just use their dialogue to explain the plot, and terrible directing by M. Night Shyamalan.
7. “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”
Jerry Bruckheimer (the man behind the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies) produced this combination of “Indiana Jones”, “National Treasure”, “The Mummy”, and “Aladdin”. All of those were a lot better than this.
6. “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”
Unfunny, gross, disgusting, bad acting and a lame story, everything the books aren’t. The tone is simply MEAN, and worse yet, there’s a sequel coming in March.
5. “Furry Vengeance”
Bad slapstick every 5 seconds, including many scenes in which Brendan Fraser gets hit in his private parts. Often very uncomfortable to watch. Oh yea, and I only laughed once. I wish I could name it the worst of the year, but there were actually four films even more dreadful.
4. “Clash of the Titans”
The most boring action film I’ve ever seen. Awful special effects, unworthy performances by “Avatar” star Sam Worthington and Liam Neeson, and a terrible 3D post-production conversion.
3. “Vampires Suck”
I knew going in that all the spoof movies are usually awful, but I had a little hope for this “Twilight” take-off because I’m not a “Twi-Hard”, and thought this had to be a little funny. Instead this movie takes the term “terrible” to a whole new level. The story, acting, and jokes were so bad, I would rather have to sit through all the “Twilight” movies than see this again.
2. “Gulliver’s Travels”
Many words can describe this movie: gross, offensive, embarrassing, disgusting, and the list goes on and on. This version of the Swift classic is shockingly bad, and we have to watch it all IN 3D! It’s so bad that all the senior citizens at the screening I attended probably wished they didn’t have their grandchildren with them, so they could have left almost immediatly, and tried to get their money back.
1. “Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore”
A cheap-looking, no laugh, sequel that never should have been made. A ridiculous story with a villian cat so creepy it was often tough to look at the screen. Part live-action, part-animated, but the mouths of the animals often don’t match up with their voices. And real-life actors don’t do much better. This movie is bad beyond belief.
Films that barely missed out, but were still terrible:
“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”
“Grown Ups”
“The Spy Next Door”
“Robin Hood”
