Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg host the first awards show of the year – this Sunday night on NBC. Who will win? It’s time for my 2019 Golden Globes Predictions:
Best Picture: Drama
Should Win: “A Star Is Born”
Will Win: “A Star Is Born”
The Upset: “Black Panther”
“A Star Is Born” seems like the logical choice. But if the HFPA really wants to create a statement (and when do they not?), then “Panther” will end the night with a major victory.
Best Actor: Drama
Should Win: Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody”
Will Win: Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born”
The Upset: Willem Dafoe, “At Eternity’s Gate”
Malek is amazing and “Bohemian” is (whether we like it or not) up for Best Picture. But Cooper has never won an acting Globe before. Dafoe, nominated last year for “The Florida Project”, would be a nice surprise choice.
Best Actress: Drama
Should Win: Nicole Kidman, “Destroyer”
Will Win: Lady Gaga, “A Star Is Born”
The Upset: Glenn Close, “The Wife”
Kidman is a Globes favorite, but it looks like Gaga will pick up her second acting trophy. Don’t count out Career Achievement Close, though.
Best Picture: Comedy or Musical
Should Win: “Mary Poppins Returns”
Will Win: “The Favourite”
The Upset: “Vice”
I’d go with “Poppins” to win, except that no Original Song nominations leads me to believe the Foreign Press didn’t love it as much as other musicals, such as “La La Land” and “The Greatest Showman”. “Vice” leads all nominations, but “The Favourite” seems like their cup of tea.
Best Actor: Comedy or Musical
Should Win: Viggo Mortensen, “Green Book”
Will Win: Christian Bale, “Vice”
The Upset: Robert Redford, “The Old Man & the Gun”
Mortensen gives the best performance, but Bale has the “showier” role. A win for Redford would be a stunner… but he is an icon with his (supposedly) final performance.
Best Actress: Comedy or Musical
Should Win: Emily Blunt, “Mary Poppins Returns”
Will Win: Emily Blunt, “Mary Poppins Returns”
The Upset: Olivia Colman, “The Favourite”
Blunt is the frontrunner, though not a guarantee. Frankly, I think it’s 50/50 between her and Colman. Everyone else is a longshot.
Best Supporting Actor
Should Win: Mahershala Ali, “Green Book”
Will Win: Mahershala Ali, “Green Book”
The Upset: Richard E. Grant, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
Ali didn’t win two years ago for “Moonlight” (remember Aaron Taylor-Johnson for “Nocturnal Animals”?), so he’s due. Watch out for Grant, though. He could go all the way to Oscar.
Best Supporting Actress
Should Win: Emma Stone, “The Favourite”
Will Win: Amy Adams, “Vice”
The Upset: Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk”
This should put the Amy Adams Academy Award Train in motion. However, SAG snub King could steal some energy of the gate.
Best Director
Should Win: Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born”
Will Win: Alfonso Cuaron, “Roma”
The Upset: Spike Lee, “BlacKkKlansman”
“Roma” isn’t eligible for Best Picture: Drama category, so I suspect this is one way the HFPA will honor the film. Cooper and Lee would be bold choices.
Best Screenplay
Should Win: “Green Book”
Will Win: “The Favourite”
The Upset: “Vice”
Probably my least “favourite” category this year
Best Animated Feature
Should Win: “Mirai”
Will Win: “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”
The Upset: “Incredibles 2” or “Isle of Dogs”
I still think this is wide open, but Spidey seems to have the momentum.
Best Foreign-Language Film
Should Win: “Roma”
Will Win: “Roma”
The Upset: Nothing is beating “Roma”
Best Original Score
Should Win: “Mary Poppins Returns”
Will Win: “Mary Poppins Returns”
The Upset: “First Man”
Again, “Poppins” isn’t a lock to win anything on Sunday night. This may actually be the best chance it has to win a category.
Best Original Song
Should Win: “Shallow”, “A Star Is Born”
Will Win: “Shallow”, “A Star Is Born”
The Upset: “Girl in the Movies”, “Dumplin’”
“Shallow” is the dominant nominee. But Dolly Parton is celebrating nomination No. 6 and has never won before. Wouldn’t it be fun to see her up on stage?
