Before I get to my opinions of the winners and loser at Sunday night’s Golden Globes, I’ve got to tell you how funny this controversy is concerning host Ricky Gervais. First of all, Ricky was hilarious. He made fun of just about everybody, including some of the Hollywood “elite” (including Brangelina) who aren’t used to being made fun of. And that’s why it worked.
And it’s not like the Hollywood Foreign Press people didn’t know what they were getting. He did the show last year! (though he wasn’t as tough on the stars as he was this time). But isn’t this what the Globes are supposed to be – the anti-Oscars? If the HFPA is smart, they’ll sign Gervias immediately to host again next year. Think how dull the show would have been without him.
As for the awards, it’s interesting that, for the second year in a row, the Best Picture, Drama winner (“The Social Network”) didn’t win a single acting award (same with “Avatar” in 2010). I got 6 of the 9 major movie categories correct, missing only Paul Giamatti (congrats to anyone who got that right), and I thought the HFP voters might go with Geoffrey Rush and “The King’s Speech” since they’re both foreign. Obviously that strategy did not work.
Also:
– It was great to see Michael Douglas and his standing ovation.
– Not many huge surprises with the winners.
– The guy who “bleeps”-out the bad language had a busy night.
Let’s hope the Oscars provide as many laughs as the Globes, but with a few more unexpected moments. Don’t forget, the Academy Award nominations will be announced next Tuesday (1/25) morning.
