Two-time Golden Globe nominee Joseph Gordon-Levitt joins Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx and Emmy winner Courtney B. Vance in the new Netflix action movie “Project Power”, which debuts this Friday. Gordon-Levitt has been an entertainment fixture since his days on TV’s “3rd Rock from the Sun”.
In looking at his best film performances, I already know what you’re gonna say: How come Joe from “Looper” isn’t on this list?! (I think that movie’s only so-so.) And what about as the title “Don Jon”, Blake in “The Dark Knight Rises” or Arthur in “Inception”? Well, they just don’t make the cut to be in my Top 5:
TOM – “(500) DAYS OF SUMMER”
I’m not over the moon for this 2009 rom-com indie, but Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are memorable together and deliver solid work.
WILEE – “PREMIUM RUSH”
This cyclist thriller, which Sony buried at the end of August in 2012, doesn’t give Gordon-Levitt the opportunity to do a lot of hefty acting. But the cycling work through the busy NYC streets is impressive.
PHILIPPE PETIT – “THE WALK”
Robert Zemeckis made a fairly moving 2015 drama about the man who walked on a tightrope between the Twin Towers. Most moviegoers ignored it (for some reason), and that’s a shame. It’s one of the career highlights for Gordon-Levitt, taking on a challenging role and making it all look effortless.
EDWARD SNOWDEN – “SNOWDEN”
Director Oliver Stone’s overlooked 2016 bio-drama once again sees an all-in Gordon-Levitt portraying a real person, this time the notorious Edward Snowden.
TOBIAS ELLIS – “7500”
This recently released airplane thriller, available on Amazon Prime Video, stars Gordon-Levitt as a pilot attempting to stop hijackers during a flight. He’s tasked with carrying pretty much all 90 minutes, and he does so very successfully.
