It really seems like Jamie Lee Curtis has been “everywhere” over the past seven years, beginning with the reprisal of her most iconic character, Laurie Strode, in the 2018 “Halloween” revival. It’s a performance that should’ve earned her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination, but of course, she would get on the ballot — and win — just four years later.
Two “Halloween” sequels were announced, which instantly lessened the impact of the 2018 film a little bit (though I’m still glad it was made). I’d like to forget that 2021’s “Halloween Kills” and 2022’s “Halloween Ends” exist, but they were two more major big screen pictures for Curtis. In between: the releases of star-studded murder mystery comedy hit “Knives Out” and The Daniels’ Best Picture winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, which would earn Curtis an Academy Award.
An Emmy would soon be on the way for Curtis’ work on dramedy “The Bear”. I’m currently in the middle of the newly released Season 4, which is definitely better than Season 3 and actually features some of the most ‘enjoyable’ and ‘palatable’ scenes, moments and episodes of the series to date, including those with Curtis. “Haunted Mansion”, “Borderlands” and “The Last Showgirl” all didn’t perform well at the box office, though she was a SAG and BAFTA nominee for the latter.
And now, on August 8th, comes the theatrical release of the initially planned straight-to-Disney+ “Freakier Friday”, the sequel to 2003’s “Freaky Friday” remake starring Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. I’ve been saying for months that I wouldn’t be shocked if this has a $70 million opening weekend. It’s the kind of follow-up, to a comedy beloved by many in a generation, that the 18-54 year-old demo will want to see right away, likely bringing those a little younger and a little older than them.
What does the rest of 2025 look like for Curtis? A role in James L. Brooks’ “Ella McCay” (out Dec. 12) and producing AppleTV+ film “The Lost Bus”, starring Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera. Fingers crossed there isn’t another “Halloween” reboot announcement on Oct. 31. It’s time to turn the page.
