Anne Hathaway and James Franco will be co-hosting the 83rd Academy Awards in February. Yes, you read that correctly. Nothing against these talented actors, but I’ve got to ask: Couldn’t they come-up with anybody better?
Is this what hosting the Oscars has come to – just pick two of the current hot, young Hollywood stars and hand them the job? What happened to this important role going to someone special: Billy Crystal, Steve Martin, even David Letterman. Or before that Bob Hope, Johnny Carson. Legendary ENTERTAINERS!
There’s a good chance that Franco will be nominated for Best Actor (for “127 Hours”), which will make it even more awkward. Once again, he’s a great actor and Hathaway is wonderful as well, and they’ll probably do a fine job as hosts. And I’m sure producers are hoping that Hathaway and Franco will attract a younger audience to the show, and they might.
But here’s the thing: This isn’t Saturday Night Live, it’s THE ACADEMY AWARDS. It’s THE biggest entertainment event of the year – all around the world! And it deserves a host just as special.
