Due to the success of “The Lion King 3D” which has now grossed more than $80 million domestically, Disney and Pixar have decided to re-release four more classics over the next two years:
“Beauty and the Beast 3D” – January 13th, 2012
Originally supposed to be released February 12th, 2010, but pushed back because of conversion problems, my all-time favorite will finally get the 3D treatment on the big screen. Let’s hope it’s a better conversion than “The Lion King”‘s.
“Finding Nemo 3D” – September 14th, 2012
I knew it would happen! Millions of people (including myself) have seen this over and over. But it’ll probably have the same impact “LK3D” has had. This will be the only other one of the group (besides “Beauty”) that I have already seen on the big screen.
“Monsters, Inc. 3D” – January 18th, 2013
Not one I would have chosen, but a strategy move to get fans excited for the prequel – “Monsters University”, which opens five months later. Disney/Pixar did the same for “Toy Story 3″ by re-releasing the first two”TS” films 8 months earlier and it worked.
“The Little Mermaid” – September 13th, 2013
I haven’t seen this in a long time, so I’m actually looking forward to the re-release.
Before “Lion King 3D”, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and the original two “Toy Story” films were Disney’s only other 3D re-releases. Now this could become an semi-annual ritual if these next four are successful. Some pretty good choices here, but “The Incredibles” should be next.
