With the release of Melissa McCarthy’s new comedy “Life of the Party”, let’s look at other recent films that give it the old college try:
“PITCH PERFECT” & “PITCH PERFECT 2”
The Bellas rose to a capella fame during their years at Barden University. I’d say “2” is slightly better than “1” simply because of the Snoop Dogg cameo.
“22 JUMP STREET”
After going back to high school, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum attend college, and the results are equally entertaining in the sharp, satirical sequel.
“MONSTERS UNIVERSITY”
Pixar’s first (and only) prequel took us to Mike and Sulley’s early educational years. The script isn’t as emotionally deep as “Monsters, Inc.” but the studio’s attention to detail and voice casting shine.
“COLLEGE ROAD TRIP”
Martin Lawrence, Raven Symone… and a pig… headline this 2008 Disney comedy bomb.
“ADMISSION”
Tina Fey gives an effective performance as an admissions worker in a disjointed indie dramedy.
“NEIGHBORS” & “NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING”
The 2014 original isn’t perfect, but it has some clever concepts. The 2016 follow-up: a mess.
“LARRY CROWNE”
I don’t think it’s a complete disaster, but it’s, without question, a misstep for everyone involved (including Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Bryan Cranston).
And then there’s… “THE SOCIAL NETWORK”
It’s a film that – every time I see parts of it on TV – I appreciate more and more.
