“Ex Machina” and “Annihilation” director, and “28 Days Later” writer, Alex Garland is about to release his latest movie. It’s “Civil War”. This is Garland’s third collaboration with A24, after “E.M.” and “Men” — and it will likely be the most successful.
BoxOfficePro.com is currently predicting the action drama will have a $15 million to $23 million opening weekend from April 12th through the 14th. If it’s anywhere in that range, “Civil War” will deliver the biggest debut ever for A24, topping 2018’s “Hereditary” (starring Toni Collette), with $13.575 million.
NEON recently had its biggest launch ever with “Immaculate”, and during the very same weekend, IFC scored its top open of all-time with “Late Night with the Devil”.
A24, which was founded in 2012, has been a major movie maker, with numerous critical and audience favorites, surprise hits and two Oscar-winning Best Pictures — “Moonlight” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once”.
If “Civil War” opens above $20 million, there’s a good chance it will be one of the Top two or three films A24 has released so far. Here’s the Top 10 list, with stats courtesy of BOP, Box Office Mojo, Box Office Report and The Numbers:
- “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (2022) $77.2 million
- “Uncut Gems” (2019) $50 million
- “Lady Bird” (2017) $49 million
- “Talk to Me” (2023) $48.3 million
- “Hereditary” (2018) $44.1 million
- “The Iron Claw” (2023) $35.6 million
- “Moonlight” (2016) $27.9 million
- “Midsommar” (2019) $27.5 million
- “Ex Machina” (2015) $25.4 million
- “The Witch” (2016) $25.1 million
Could “Civil War” have the first $80 million-plus gross in A24 history? It depends on how many people want to see it right away, how many want to experience it more than once, and how the audience word of mouth is during the rest of April, ahead of what’s shaping up to be a busy and blockbuster heavy summer movie season. My current predictions: “Civil War” will absolutely have the biggest A24 open yet ($20M) and will end-up in 2nd Place on the studio’s All-Time Top 10 list ($55M).
