Summer is winding down but Awards Show buzz is heating-up. Here are the latest updates:
Golden Globes – The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced that Jimmy Fallon will host the 74th Globes telecast, airing live Sunday, January 8th on NBC. Fallon has presented at the show several times before but has never hosted. However, NBC has been itching for him to emcee for more than five years. NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt told The Hollywood Reporter, “He’s our first choice for any of these things; The first person we always go to is Jimmy.”
SAG Awards – SAG-AFTRA will be honoring Lily Tomlin with the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award at the 23rd Annual SAG Awards. Tomlin, most recently seen on the big screen in “Grandma”, was also recently nominated for this year’s Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Primetime Emmy for Netflix’s “Grace and Frankie”.
The Oscars – The Academy has re-elected President Cheryl Boone Issacs, and on Independence Day, they welcomed 683 new members, with 41% of them people of color. According to The LA Times, this raises the overall rate of non-white Oscar voters from 8% to 11%.
Critics Choice – The Broadcast Film Critics and Television Journalists Associations have joined forces for the first-ever Critics Choice Documentary Awards. The ceremony, to be held Thursday November 3 in Brooklyn, NY, will recognize the best documentary films and TV specials of 2016. Nominees will be announced on October 10. As a proud BFCA member, I will have the honor of voting on these awards – which means Screener Season starts earlier than ever! The 22nd Annual Critics Choice Awards will return to A&E in January.
