This past weekend, “Up” was originally reported to be the box office winner. But that was according to estimates. But on Monday the actual results were announced, and it turns out that “The Hangover” was really #1, since it beat “Up” by about $900,000.
The difference between the estimates and the actuals can be a bit confusing. The industry puts out the weekend box office results every Sunday afternoon. They call them ‘estimates’ because they are a prediction of what insiders think the films are going to do, based on how they did Friday and Saturday. This way everybody can know what the #1 film in the country is Sunday night and the new Top 10 can get into the Monday papers.
However, this past weekend, a lot more people went to see “The Hangover” on Sunday than was predicted, so when the actual figures came out on Monday “The Hangover” had won.
The actuals didn’t help “Land of the Lost”. It dropped from $19.5M to $18.8M, making it officials the first box office bomb of the summer.
