Nearly all of Hugh Jackman’s movies have been distributed by one of the six major studios. His latest: the new sci-fi action thriller “Reminiscence” for Warner Bros. It’s his first WB picture since 2015’s “Pan” (which was largely panned). Jackman also starred in 2013’s “Prisoners”, 2006’s “The Fountain”, 2001’s “Swordfish” (which I recently watched on TV for the first time) and 2006’s animated “Happy Feet” for the studio. (HBO is in the Warner Family, and the channel aired “Bad Education” last year, about two months before the official launch of HBO Max.)
The Academy Award nominated and Tony Award winning Jackman had a long relationship with 20th Century Fox (which has now been absorbed into Disney). For Fox, Jackman played Wolverine in all those “X-Men” movies, including 2017 finale “Logan”, as well as P.T. Barnum in “The Greatest Showman” and roles in 2016’s “Eddie the Eagle”, 2008’s “Deception”, 2001’s “Someone Like You” and 2008’s “Australia”, opposite Nicole Kidman. Hugh even appeared as himself in the studio’s 2014 “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb”. (Fox Searchlight was behind 2011’s “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” and 2015’s “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”, which featured a vocal cameo.)
Jackman has also been a major asset to Universal, with the starring role in 2004’s “Van Helloing” and his Oscar nominated performance in 2012 musical “Les Miserables”. (Subsidiary Focus Features distributed 2006’s “Scoop”.) He lent his voice to two DreamWorks Animation features that, at the time, were distributed by Paramount, “Flushed Away” (2006) and “Rise of the Guardians” (2012). ViacomCBS now owns about half of Miramax, which released 2002’s “Kate & Leopold”. And even Disney’s Touchstone Pictures released a couple Jackman films: 2006’s “The Prestige” and 2011’s “Real Steel”.
Let’s not forget Sony. Features have included 2018’s “The Front Runner” (where he portrayed Gary Hart) and 2015’s crappie “Chappie”. Sony Pictures Classics will release Jackman’s upcoming “The Son”, from Oscar winning “The Father” director Florian Zeller.
