We’re halfway through 2018. At the end of the year, I’ll have my complete list of the 18 Best Movie Trailers of 2018. Here are my 9 selections for the first half of the year:
“BEAUTIFUL BOY”
The newest trailer released of the group – this drama stars Steve Carell and Timothee Chalamet as a father and son struggling with their relationship. Amazon Studios has set an October release date, positioning it as an awards season contender.
“CREED II”
Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone are back for the sequel to 2015’s powerhouse “Rocky” reboot. This time, this focus seems to be predominantly on Jordan’s Adonis, who will be fighting a Drago in the ring.
“EIGHTH GRADE”
A24’s marketing on this excellent coming-of-age dramedy began with this wholehearted trailer that has the feel and flavor of the film without giving too much away.
“THE HAPPYTIME MURDERS” (Red-Band)
This one makes the list purely because of shock-value. When this debuted at the “Deadpool 2” showing I attended, the entire crowd was stunned and speechless.
“MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN” (Trailer 1)
10 years after the original (based on the broadway musical phenomenon), the cast has gotten even more star-studded, with Lily James and Cher joining Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried & Co. for the follow-up.
“MARY POPPINS RETURNS”
Disney debuted the teaser for their highly-anticipated sequel during the Oscars, with Emily Blunt flying down to London and then seeing herself (and another version of herself – ?) in the mirror.
“MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT” (Trailer 1)
The best of the bunch: this is a slick, energized and entertaining two and a half minutes.
“A STAR IS BORN”
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s modern version of the classic story has plenty of appeal.
“WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR?” (Trailer 1)
An emotionally satisfying and spiritual look at Mr. Rogers that has had audiences in tears for months (like the film itself).
