“The Shape of Water” leads all film nominations with 7, followed by “The Post” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” with 6 each.
SURPRISES: “All the Money in the World” has been nominated for 3 awards: Best Director (Ridley Scott), Best Actress in a Drama (Michelle Williams) and Best Supporting Actor (Christopher Plummer), but not Best Picture Drama.
“Ferdinand” (out this weekend) and “The Boss Baby” are in the Best Animated Feature category. “Ferdinand” is also up for Best Song for Nick Jonas’ “Home”.
Ansel Elgort in the Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical category for “Baby Driver”.
“The Greatest Showman” is in the Best Picture: Comedy or Musical category, as well as Hugh Jackman and Best Song (“This is Me”).
“The Star”, performed by Mariah Carey, gives Sony Animation a song nomination.
Aaron Sorkin in the Best Screenplay category for “Molly’s Game”, but the HFPA loves Sorkin. They gave him the Best Screenplay award two years ago for “Steve Jobs” – and he didn’t end-up getting an Oscar nomination.
Denzel Washington is still very much in the Best Actor race with a Best Actor in a Drama nom for “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” And don’t count out Judi Dench, who received a Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical nom for “Victoria & Abdul”. Helen Mirren is a surprise competition for Dench for “The Leisure Seeker”.
SNUBS: “The Big Sick” was completely shut out.
Jordan Peele and Greta Gerwig are not in the Best Director category, but Gerwig is in the Best Screenplay category and Peele’s “Get Out” is a Best Picture: Comedy or Musical nominee.
Patrick Stewart isn’t a Supporting Actor nominee. “Logan”, “Wonder Woman” and “War for the Planet of the Apes” all didn’t receive any nominations.
Jake Gyllenhaal earned a Critics Choice Award Best Actor nomination for “Stronger”, but he didn’t make it into the Best Actor in a Drama category here.
“The LEGO Batman Movie” and “Cars 3” – The HFPA gave “Cars” their first Best Animated Feature award, and they nominated “Cars 2”.
