One of the top awards shows is celebrating 25 years this January. It’s time for my SAG Awards Nominations React:
Emily Blunt is a DOUBLE nominee: she’s up for Lead Actress for “Mary Poppins Returns” and Supporting Actress for “A Quiet Place”. Her husband John Krasinski is also a Lead Actor in a Drama series contender for his role on Amazon’s “Jack Ryan”.
Margot Robbie makes a grand entrance in this awards season on the Supporting Actress ballot for her performance in “Mary Queen of Scots”. Regina King, who some have considered an Oscar frontrunner, is snubbed for her work in “If Beale Street Could Talk”.
“A Star Is Born” earned four nominations – Ensemble, Lead Actor (Bradley Cooper), Lead Actress (Lady Gaga) and Supporting Actor (Sam Elliott). SAG voters also clearly loved “BlacKkKlansman”, nominating the ensemble, as well as John David Washington (Lead Actor) and Adam Driver (Supporting Actor).
“Black Panther” is also an Ensemble nom, joining “Crazy Rich Asians”, “A Star Is Born” and… for some crazy reason… “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Yes, Rami Malek (Lead Actor nominee is fantastic) – but the entire cast? That’s a downright shocker.
Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant are both nominated for their performances in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” McCarthy took the slot that might’ve otherwise gone to Nicole Kidman for “Destroyer”. Kidman also got snubbed for her Supporting role in “Boy Erased”.
The Coen Brothers’ “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” received no nominations from both the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. But it finally enters the awards season race with a nomination in the Stunt Ensemble category. It joins “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” and three Marvel movies: “Ant-Man and the Wasp”, “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Black Panther”.
