This Wednesday, September 14, Fathom Events will be screening the new thriller, “Snowden”, in select theaters nationwide one day before its regularly-scheduled release (Thurs. Sept. 15 at 7pm). The highly-anticipated biopic on the infamous U.S. government contractor who, in 2013, leaked stunning, classified NSA information and immediately became a wanted criminal, stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Tom Wilkinson, and Nicolas Cage.
Distribution studio Open Road originally slated the film for a Christmas Day 2015 release. However, a year or so ago, they moved it to 2016, likely having the foresight to put all their eggs into one basket (and one film): Best Picture Oscar winner, “Spotlight”. May 13 was Open Road’s first, new choice, but shortly after settling on the new date they shifted “Snowden” again, to the third weekend in Sept.
Three-time Academy Award winning director Oliver Stone (“Midnight Express”, “Platoon”, “Born on the Fourth of July”) recently revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he chose to miss his mother’s funeral during production of “Snowden”: “I would have had to cut, like, four days of filming. And we couldn’t afford it.”
A bonus aspect of Wednesday night’s Fathom Events “Snowden” screening is that it includes a live Q&A (ET/CT) with Stone and…from Moscow…Edward Snowden himself, following the movie. The estimated 45-minute presentation is sure to be, like both Stone and Snowden, explosive, controversial, and completely unpredictable.
