It’s that time of the year when critics, including myself, makes their picks for the best films of the year. Here are mine.
#5) “In the Shadow of the Moon.” This documentary, produced by Ron Howard, tells the story of the 9 astronauts who went to the moon. “In the Shadow of the Moon” makes the list because it’s educational, interesting and funny. It’ll be out on DVD in February.
#4) “Alvin and the Chipmunks.” The big screen debut of David Seville and the Chipmunks is fun from start to finish. The music is great, there are laughs galore and there’s a nice message about family. See it while it’s still in theaters.
“Surf’s Up” is my #3 pick, dudes. The animated mockumentary features Shia LaBeouf as the voice of surfing penguin Cody Maverick. The story is cleaver and the voices are great. “Surf’s Up” is already out on DVD.
At #2 – “The Simpsons Movie.” Yes, Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie hit the big screen this year, with hysterical results. Some were worried that the film wouldn’t live-up to the TV show. But it does! In fact, at 88 minutes, it’s exactly 4 TV episodes back-to-back. “The Simpsons Movie” is just out on DVD. If you didn’t get it for Christmas you must have really been naughty this year.
And finally, at #1 – “Ratatouille.” This year’s Disney/Pixar film stars a rat named Remy who loves to cook. He teams-up with a young cook named Linguini who CAN’T cook, and together they become the best chef in Paris. If you missed it in theaters last summer “Ratatouille” is out on DVD…with some great extras. It may not be my favorite Disney/Pixar movie of all-time but it is the Best Film of 2007.
Hope 2008 is a great year for you at the movies. I’ll be back next week (following a short vacation) with my list of the 5 Worst Movies of 2007.
Happy New Year !!!!
