Last year Disney’s family comedy “The Game Plan” was predictable and not very funny. And Disney does it again in 2008 with “College Road Trip”, which is one of the worst films of the year so far.
Martin Lawrence stars as a police officer whose daughter wants to go to a college that’s far away from home (Georgetown) instead of the college that he wants her to go to (Northwestern), which is only 40-miles from their home. Disney Channel’s own Raven-Symone plays the daughter.
The two go on a road trip to see both colleges and a lot of crazy things happen along the way, but none of them are very funny.
The plot also includes a little brother and his pet pig. They seem like they belong in another movie and, also, aren’t funny.
The acting in “College Road Trip” is not very good. Raven has a long way to go to be as good an actress as former Disney Channel star turned singer turned actress Hilary Duff. Lawrence seems bored and even the first film appearance by Donny Osmond in 30-years doesn’t help things.
The movie is filled with supporting roles played by current Disney Channel actors. Maybe this should have been a Disney Channel movie, so people wouldn’t have had to waste money seeing it in the theater or now renting or buiyng it.
“College Road Trip” is rated G so there’s nothing in it that should scare parents away. If you’re a Raven fan I guess you might like it, though there were a lot of teenage girls in the theater when I first saw it and there wasn’t much laughing.
On The Official Kid Critic Report Card, “College Road Trip” gets a D!
This is one trip you just do not want to take.
