The 23rd Annual Critics Choice Awards are Sunday Dec. 10. And I vote for who the nominees will be on Nov. 27. That means that I’ll be seeing as many movies as I can between now and then – including what could be a jam-packed Thanksgiving week.
That’s because it was last year, when I saw a personal record 19 new movies in 11 days. I saw 4 of them in a theater, and I watched the rest on personal screeners sent-out by the studios to BFCA members. During the 11 days, I also went to college classes, interviewed actress Gillian Jacobs, and celebrated Thanksgiving. Plus, I wrote reviews for all but 3 of the films.
Here’s how the stretch went:
Thu 11/17 – “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”
Fri 11/18 – “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” and “The Comedian”
Sat 11/19 – “Don’t Think Twice” and “La La Land”
Sun 11/20 – “The Red Turtle”
Mon 11/21 – “The Founder”
Tue 11/22 – “Nocturnal Animals” and “Moana”
Wed 11/23 – “Rules Don’t Apply” and “Miss Sloane”
Thu 11/24 – “A Monster Calls” and “Manchester by the Sea”
Fri 11/25 – “Gold”, “Live By Night” and “Patriots Day”
Sat 11/26 – “Sing” (at AMC Theater in CT), “Hidden Figures”
Sun 11/27 – “Fences”
Mon 11/28 – Critics Choice Nominations Voting Day
So, what’s gonna happen this year? The FilmColumbia Festival is going on this week in Chatham, NY, and they’ve got some of the big contenders, including “Call Me By Your Name”, “I, Tonya” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”.
But there are more than 20 other movies that I need to see between Nov. 1 & the 26th. Titles include: “Coco”, “Darkest Hour”, “The Disaster Artist”, “Downsizing”, “The Greatest Showman”, “Justice League”, “Molly’s Game”, “Phantom Thread”, “The Post”, “Roman J. Israel, Esq.”, “The Shape of Water”, “Thor: Ragnarok”, “Wonder” and “Wonder Wheel”.
I’ll catch some of them in theaters, and I’ll watch the rest on screeners at home. Here’s hoping the studios send them out to BFCA members in time.
