Friday night I attended the local premiere of “Honeydripper”, the new film by writer/director John Sayles. Sayles grew-up and attended school not far from where I live and he came back (with producer and partner Maggie Renzi) to show the film as part of a fund-raiser for area kids.
There was a Q&A session before the movie and I asked Sayles whether or not he reads reviews and cares about what reviewers think about his movies. Ms. Renzi said that if there’s one director in the movie business who doesn’t care about what other people think it’s John Sayles. Mr. Sayles said he stopped reading and listening to reviews a long time ago.
My dad and I got to meet both of them in the lobby after the show. He told me that he’s one of the screenwriters for “The Spiderwick Chronicles”, which I did not know. I told him the movie was coming-out of Feb. 15, which he didn’t know.
It was very exciting to finally meet, not only a major director, but a 2-time Academy Award nominee. I also got a picture with him and an autographed photo to add to my collection.
I gave Ms. Renzi this website address. Hopefully they’ll read my review of “Honeydripper”, which I liked a lot. Now I want to watch some more of John Sayles films starting with “The Secret of Roan Inish (1994).
